My Author Ruckus in New Orleans

Happy July to all my Fistful Faithful!

I’ve just returned from a sojourn back in the Big Easy. Too often in recent years, I’ve had to take trips to my home state of Louisiana for official business, or other less pleasant affairs. Thus it was refreshing to take a genuine vacation for a change. The family did the whole tourist thing… we stopped by Commander’s Palace for brunch, took an airboat tour of the bayou, fed alligators marshmallows, and had more than our fair share of fried seafood.

We also arranged a book signing and author meet-and-greet through our publisher. The Garden District Bookshop hosted us for an evening event down on Prytania Street. My wife and I signed books, and had a surprisingly vibrant Q&A with those gathered.

A fine affair!

Now for my latest author news…

The audiobook for The Curse Servant is officially online at Audible.com. Once again, Neil Hellegers dropped a bomb of awesome with his narration. The audiobook for The Curse Mandate is in-process, and is scheduled for release August 15th!

Speaking of August… Book 4 of the Dark Choir series has been bumped up for early publication! THE DARK INTEREST will release on Tuesday, August 22nd.

If you’ve read any of my books, please consider leaving a review on Amazon. These really help… no matter if it’s 5 star or 1 star. I appreciate anyone giving my books a read!

Now for future news… I’m wrapping up pre-production of Dark Interest with the publisher, after which I’ll return to writing Book 5. My aim is to push on until I wrap up the Dark Choir series with Book 6. After that, I’ve already begun the pre-writing and world-building process for my next series. I expect to dive straight into it… and fans of the Dark Choir series will be happy to hear that I’m not wandering far. The Veil Guard series will be a true spin-off of Dark Choir. Same setting, same world, new characters, new conflicts. So stay tuned for that!

Stay cool, everyone. Drink a lemonade or limon cielo for me!

Divergent Fates Anthology & Other News

Near the beginning of the year, I posted about my 2017 publishing plans, which included two short stories. Since then, my first short story “Fail House” has been published in the Darkscapes Anthology released in January.

Plus, new developments have sprung to life… a series of Dark Choir audiobooks has been optioned by Tantor Media. The first, The Curse Merchant, has been out for a few weeks, now. The audiobook edition of The Curse Servant will release on Audible.

And the latest announcement has been that The Dark Interest, Book 4 of the Dark Choir series, has been bumped up to an August 22nd release date! So, you’ll be able to continue Dorian Lake’s journey into darkness sooner than expected!

But what about that second short story I’d already mentioned? Glad you asked!

18700614_1357325747637419_6626279462815124883_o

I’ve contributed a short story, “Snake Oil: a Tale of the Badlands”, to the Divergent Fates anthology. This is a themed anthology of tales all told within Matthew Cox’s Divergent Fates universe. I love this sort of project, as it allows us to stretch our muscles and take on new genres and viewpoints. “Snake Oil” is a particularly grim, post-apocalyptic tale of homesteaders trying to protect their tiny slice of the Badlands from roving warlords. It’s a tale of love, guilt, wholesale slaughter, and psychotic telepaths.

Be sure to pick up a copy of this anthology… it’s quite diverse in setting, though all told within the same settings as such of Cox’s bestsellers as Division Zero, Virtual Immortality, and the Awakened Series.

And once you’ve done that, remember to keep your ears peeled for the Curse Servant audiobook this June!

The Curse Merchant Audiobook is Here!

Big news today, me hearties! After several requests over the past couple years, and some hard work by the good folk over at Tantor Media, the audiobook for The Curse Merchant is now available on CD or Audible!

cmaudiobook

The audiobook edition is narrated by star of stage and screen, Neil Hellegers. You’ve seen him in shows such as Gotham, Blacklist, Blue Bloods, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and is a veteran audiobook narrator. I listened to the first four chapters on my way to work already, and I seriously thought about calling in “booked”.

Guys… you gotta snatch this up! It’s fantastic.

So, that’s the big news for today. The audiobook for The Curse Servant will come out June 20th.

In the way of future news… the release date for Book 4 of the Dark Choir series, The Dark Interest, has been bumped up to August 22nd! So, you won’t have to wait so long for the next outing of Dorian Lake. I’ve begun writing Book 5, The Dark Principle. This one promises to be one hell of a ride. Literally.

My Author Update for Spring

Hello there, all you Fistful Faithful! Happy spring, and gesundheit. Cherry trees are blossoming in my neighborhood, my apple trees are showing leaf buds already, and I fear I may need to get my lawn mower out of storage and ready for another season of leafy-green beatdowns.

I’ve had a surprisingly active first quarter of this year. Book 3 of the Dark Choir series, THE CURSE MANDATE, published the week before Christmas, and has been very well received so far. The six-book arc of Dorian Lake’s journey into darkness moves forward, and the publisher has completed two editing passes on Book 4, THE DARK INTEREST… which will be available next January.

I also had a short story, “Fail House”, published in the Curiosity Quills anthology DARKSCAPES. As usual, the CQ anthologies are like samplers of their in-house authors. This story is a bit of a change from my usual subject matter… a near-future dystopian view of America in economic collapse.

This February, The Curse Merchant was featured on a BookBub promotion, and we saw tremendous response there… leading me to my next exciting announcement. The first two books of the Dark Choir series have been picked up by Tantor Media to create audiobooks! They will be narrated by veteran actor of stage and screen, Neil Hellegers. The audiobook of Curse Merchant will be available May 23rd, in audio CD and on Audible. This is kind of a big deal for me, since having audiobooks available was a big item on my professional bucket list!

Pursuant to all of this fervor and hubbub, I’ve put my “putting my plans on pause” plan on pause, and have begun outlining Book 5 of the Dark Choir series, THE DARK PRINCIPLE. Thus far, the outline is action-packed!

One last item, I’ll be making a public appearance on April 15th, signing books alongside my wife Courtney Sloan at the Fairfax Library Foundation Book Fair. The event is facilitated by Barnes & Noble, and all proceeds for this event benefit the Fairfax Library Foundation. This is super-important to me, as I feel that libraries are a vital part of any civilized society. They are islands of learning and knowledge made available to all. They are community centers, shining beacons in a society that appears more and more dedicated to forwarding ignorance. What’s more… libraries are often safe spaces for youth who need a place to be, particularly in troubled neighborhoods. Anything we can do to forward the mission of public libraries is time well spent!

Immediately after the Library Foundation event, we’ll be heading over to Social Eatery Bar for a mixer, so join us there and get yourself a nice fruity beverage with one of those little umbrellas while you crack open one of our books!

That’s enough excitement for now… keep your eyes open for those audiobooks, and see you in Fairfax, Virginia, on April 15th!

New Covers/Fiction for the New Year

Happy New Year, all you Fistful Faithful!

Now that the glowing embers of that dumpster fire that was 2016 are behind us, we look ahead to 2017, hoping beyond hope that it has a kinder, gentler disposition.

On the Dark Choir front, we have some shake-ups on tap. First of all, you’re aware that the third book in the Dark Choir series, THE CURSE MANDATE, is available for purchase. Even better, the paperback edition is finally online at Amazon, and you can hold the real deal in your hands!

Furthermore, the publisher has decided to re-brand the cover for THE CURSE MERCHANT to align with the latest entry, effectively giving Dorian Lake a sexy makeover.

cover1

And the latest in Dark Choir news… I have officially signed the contract for Book 4, THE DARK INTEREST, which is tentatively scheduled for release January 2018.

But what about 2017, you ask? This will be the year of short fiction for me, as I have two short stories publishing this year in their respective anthologies. If you hop over to my Books page, you’ll note that the short story prequel to the Dark Choir series, “Bait & Witch”, appeared in the Curiosity Quills CHRONOLOGY anthology. Well, CQ is releasing a new anthology this year called DARKSCAPES, and I have an entry waiting for your hot little hands. It’s a short titled “Fail House”, which follows two unemployed Americans in a near-future dystopia as they attempt to survive a labor riot. DARKSCAPES releases at the end of this month… I’ll keep you posted!

And coming later this year, I joined a collaboration of authors penning short stories within Matthew Cox‘s Divergent Fates supersetting. It’s a diverse world incorporating sci-fi, cyberpunk, a gritty post-apocalyptic milieus. My contribution, “Snake Oil”, takes place within the Badlands, a setting you’ll find in one of his best-sellers, Prophet of the Badlands. Stay tuned for a release date on that one!

In the meantime, I have a huge… YUUUUGE… project I’m getting ramped up for, and I’m looking forward to seeing it take shape. I might have to keep that under wraps for a bit, so take care and keep reading!

Cover Reveal – THE CURSE MANDATE

Six days! That’s all we have until the release of THE CURSE MANDATE!

I’m cooking up an online release party, and all of the Fistful Faithful are expressly invited. I’ll post up details as they come.

But in the meantime, I’m sure you guys are wondering about the cover for Mandate? You are? I KNEW IT…J’ACCUSE! Here you go, my friends…the cover for The Curse Mandate.

cover3

And the cover summary:

War is coming…how much hell will Dorian Lake unleash when the gloves come off?

Saddled with both a new pupil and a bar to run, Dorian has to pick his battles carefully if he is to find his soul. When the Dark Choir bargains with Dorian in exchange for his loyalty, the power they offer may be too valuable to refuse…for a new menace threatens the hermetic order in America.

Members of the Presidium are being outed in the press, and the formidable cabal’s response is swift and brutal. But Dorian has no time to hide from the Presidium’s fury, as the new Deputy Mayor taps him to investigate a string of occult crimes. Dorian soon uncovers an ancient enemy of the Presidium, which threatens to plunge America into a lawless era not seen since the Dark Ages.

To sway Dorian to their cause, the Presidium gives him free rein to practice Netherwork. But even if the man without a soul can survive this conflict, if he can protect his friends and allies, if he can mean the difference between order and chaos… will this mandate save Dorian Lake from the schemes of the Dark Choir?

For those of you who were wishing for more world-building in the Dark Choir series, this one is for you! It’s a meaty book at 450 pages, wherein I lens out the focus from Baltimore to the national stage. There’s inter-cabal politics, a centuries-old conspiracy dating to the founding of the nation, and the Dark Choir has now arrived in the flesh!

Releases Monday… keep your eyes open, and spread the word. I’d LOVE for this to be a big release!

Holiday Sales Notice

Hey guys… just a quick note for some limited-time holiday sales on my titles!

Dec 11th & 12th, YEA THOUGH I WALK will be on an Amazon Countdown deal for $0.99 (Kindle Edition).

Likewise, THE CURSE MERCHANT and THE CURSE SERVANT hit the ninety-nine cent sale on Dec 17th & 18th. This is a good opportunity to bone up on Books 1 and 2 of the Dark Choir series before Book 3 hits Amazon on the 19th!

Book Trailer for Yea Though I Walk

Happy Holidays, dear Fistful Faithful…

We are exactly three weeks away from the release of THE CURSE MANDATE, Book 3 of the Dark Choir series. As such, I will be shifting my focus away from Yea Though I Walk, and switch back into Dorian Lake mode.

But I do have one parting shot for my horror/western…a book trailer I hammered together. Take a gander, and spread the word. This book really was my labor of love, and I’m particularly proud of the finished product.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming info on The Curse Mandate, including the cover and where to buy! In the meantime, work off those turkey comas!
